mobile, mobile, everywhere

The New York Times has a great article on some leading media companies and what they are doing in mobile. It's very exciting to see the focus they are placing on their mobile initiatives and the early success they are experiencing. For a long time, it took a special kind of company to "get mobile", and usually the companies that understood mobile the best were small and lacked any considerable media assets.

In order for mobile to continue its rapid growth, we have all been waiting for some of the major content companies to come in and make real commitments to the medium. It's exciting to see the early successes of the trailblazers amongst these large players and we look forward to more best of breed content companies joining mobile in a big way. One particularly exciting tidbit from the article:

"But ESPN is clearly onto something. More than nine million people visit its cellphone Web site each month, a following that surpasses the audience of most computer-based Web sites."

Nice.
